Overview

The ZNA virus is the ‘zombie’ virus that has brought about the near-destruction of civilization as people knew it. It began in the late summer of 2014 (19 years ago, ICly) and quickly spread unchecked due to it’s similarity to the common flu.
Description

The ZNA virus is a heavily mutated strain of the RNA (influenza) virus, with many similar symptoms and its hardiness to survive. It continues to mutate regularly, making antidotes difficult to develop and limited in their effectiveness. A vaccine has not been developed.
Transmitted by: Fluid transfer, Blood or Saliva
Incubation Period: 24-36 Hours
Story

It began as what seemed to be nothing more than a new strain of the flu. The biggest difference, however, was that near the end of the incubation period, patients suffered extreme, spiking fevers and dramatic muscle aches. No patient has ever survived the virus once the intensified fever set in.
One way to tell ZNA apart from regular flu is that the whites of an infected person’s eyes grow red and the pupils cloud over. This causes them blurry vision.
Origin

The exact origin of ZNA is unknown, but it has been determined that animals (particularly family pets) played a dramatic role in spreading the strain. Non-human mammals can easily contract ZNA and spread it very easily without showing any of the outward symptoms. They do not suffer the effects of ZNA and it’s nearly impossible to tell that an animal is infected, save that their skin pigment alters. It takes on a dull, greyish cast, losing almost all pigment. This is most obvious on the nose and along the belly.
Precautions

Because the virus is not airborne, there is no need for masks or respirators.  However, extreme caution is to be taken around infected persons and animals. The virus cannot be transferred simply by the skin coming into contact with infected blood/saliva, it must enter the body somehow, most commonly eye-rubbing, scratching, swallowing, or wound contact. It is unclear whether it can be transmitted sexually, but doctors believe it is within the realm of possibility.
Use of gloves and other protective clothing is advised when dealing with infected persons/animals or the remains of the same. It is strongly advised that the bodies of the dead be burned for safety, as they remain a contamination risk. Infected animals can be safely eaten if cooked thoroughly, but caution must be taken when butchering and cooking to avoid cross-contamination.
Mechanics

If a person succumbs to the virus, within a few minutes of death, they will reanimate as a zombie. However, if a person is infected and dies prior to the infection killing them, there is a period of 2-6 hours before the corpse rises again.
